The Battle of Moytirra

The Battle of Moytirra (Cath Maige Tuired) described in Gaelic literature likely has ninth-century origins. Different versions of the epic myth are preserved in modern folklore, and ties to the story are reflected in the names of natural and built landmarks, lakes and prehistoric monuments in an area east of Lough Arrow and along the Unshin River, County Sligo. Though the drama is spread across Ireland, its culmination takes place here, in fields strewn with glacial boulders. 

This is the second of two battles. The Tuatha Dé Dannan, having already defeated the Firbolg, now face the Fomorians. The tale features Tuatha de Dannan gods such as the Dagda, Ogma and the Morrigan. The climax has Balor, the fearsome Fomorian giant with his blazing, all-consuming eye, confronting his grandson, Lug Lamhfada, the long-armed youthful hero.
